The South Coast offers a variety of food options, but one thing that’s hard to find is authentic Portuguese food! Since the South Coast has such a high population of Portuguese, Azorean, and Brazilian residents, it’s only natural that the delicious food followed suit. Vegetarians beware, the culture loves meat and seafood!
Some of the area’s best Portuguese cuisine can be found at the Inner Bay Cafe. Located near New Bedford‘s bay, you can enjoy your meal in one of their charming dining rooms, or out on their deck for a beautiful sunset on the water. Naturally, they couldn’t claim themselves as Portuguese without traditional plates like their Codfish Broa, which is made with cornbread, traditional Portuguese seasoning, crushed pepper, and other tasty ingredients. Inner Bay’s spicy Chourico, served flaming on a traditional Portuguese plate, shows just a little of Inner Bay’s artistic side when it comes to their food. Some other local favorites include the Octopus dish, or their Regional Tuna, made with pumpkin seeds and black pepper, served over vegetables. Every seafood dish at Inner Bay uses fresh ingredients straight off of New Bedford’s own fishing boats, so you know your meal will be top quality and fresh. Antonio’s Restaurant and Cafe in New Bedford also has plenty of great Portuguese options. With a sports bar /family room, you can enjoy a meal no matter what the occasion. My favorite plates are the Steak Antonio’s style, served with a slice of ham, an egg, rice, and fries, and the Cacoila plate. If you want to watch your favorite sports while you enjoy delicious Portuguese food, you can also head down the street to the End Zone Sports Pub. They have multiple big screen TVs to watch as you enjoy savor dishes like Carne Espito (marinated tenderloin tips) and Portuguese style Littlenecks and Shrimp. For some Azorean flavor, visit Portas da Cidade in Westport. Try their Galinho Á Alentejana, which combines sauteed chicken with their delicious littlenecks and potatoes. Almost everything they serve at Portas da Cidade is made in Azorean or Madeiran style, so it’s near impossible to choose something delicious!
While these definitely aren’t the only Portuguese restaurants on the South Coast, they’re great places to start your food adventures with Portuguesse roots. There’s plenty of beef, pork, and fish to go around and when you’re done, make sure to finish your experience with something sweet like malasadas or sweet rice pudding, and of course, some Madeira wine!
