South Coast Library Love Affair
Oh, but I do love a library. Any library, all libraries, pull me in like a moth to a flame. Bibliophile that I am, this is no surprise. However, books are only one of the many reasons to love your library. No matter what you’re looking for, chances are you will find it at your South Coast library.
If you’re in the mood for a good book, of course a library is the place to go.
Looking for a place to hang out with the kids for the morning? The library is ready for you.
Hankering for a group where you can talk about the great read you’re in the middle of or where you can get feedback on your writing? Check out your local library.
Can’t figure out how to properly operate your iPhone? Head to your nearest library.
Need to update your resume and find a job? The library can help you.
Do you want to enjoy a film, concert, or event? Library, library, library.
Most of you are familiar with our libraries’ more common services like book borrowing, children’s story times and museum passes, but if you haven’t darkened the doorstep of the library lately, you are missing out. Here are just a few of the new resources you’ll find.
Music lovers can still thumb through CD and DVD collections, but library members now have access to over 7 million songs from over 28,000 labels through Freegal. Use your library card to download up to three free songs every week! The service works with most computers, players, tablets, or smartphones. Check it out at the Southworth Library in Dartmouth or Millicent Library in Fairhaven.
Film buffs might want to forego the usual trip to the movie theater and contact the library to see what’s playing. For example, this month as part of their Book to Film Series, Wareham Free Library is hosting a free showing of Life of Pi based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel.
Literary minded individuals can plug into book clubs at most of the South Coast libraries, and writers can join a writing community. Both the New Bedford Public Library’s Wilks Branch and the Mattapoisett Free Library offer weekly writer groups where you can share work and get feedback.
Go back to school tuition free. Your library card is now your student ID! Universal Class provides hundreds of online continuing education classes in nearly any subject you can think of. A Universal Class annual membership is currently $189, but you can access it free at Mattapoisett Free Library. Adults can also take advantage of volunteer tutors for basic academic skill building at the Wareham Free Library. Ask your South Coast library if they offer computer classes. It’s never too late to learn!
Technologically impaired individuals like myself will be happy to know that there is someone to help you work that blasted contraption…that’s right…at your South Coast library! Contact the Mattapoisett Free Library to sign up for the next iPad and iPhone workshop.
Your library is now your job coach. Through your library you can assess your skills, update your resume, and practice interviewing skills. This is all thanks to a partnership with Optimal Resume.com an online career development service. Your ticket to join? Your library card.
I could go on, but you get the picture. South Coast libraries have it all. Love them, visit them, support them!
