Six Spectacular South Coast Sunset Locations

I’m sure local residents agree that we have some of the most beautiful sunrise and sunsets here on the South Coast-all year around! Of course coastal living is picture perfect anyway, but we are lucky enough to live in such a nationally recognized historical community boating some of the world’s oldest and influential floating tales of the sea.

Keeping with our Sunday South Coast sunset theme, (and with a personal motive begging you for more beautiful sunset photos) I put together a list of some of the quaintest and spectacular spots to catch a South Coast sunset. Or join the birds and watch a new day dawn at sunrise.

Feel free to add any of your favorite spots along with posting pictures for all to enjoy a slice of South Coast serenity by the sea!

1. Little Harbor Beach, Wareham

Little Harbor Beach is a mainland remote beach location perfect for sun gazers. Ride down Little Harbor Road leading to a wide open parking lot revealing a spectacular view of the sunset. Entertain a dream of living large in one of the beautiful mansions situated across the water! If you catch the sunset during a full moon, don’t be surprised to see the tide rising up to the parking lot-an added bonus if you ask me.

Phabornbtg2. Padanaram Harbor, South Dartmouth

Padanaram is a National Historic village located in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. This charming piece of South Coast heaven rests along the Apponagansett River also known as Padanaram Harbor or Apponagansett Bay. Grab yourself a cone of ice cream nearby at Dockside Ice Cream and choose your personal serenity sunset spot. I like to watch the sunset by the harbor port as the colors of the earth illuminate all sorts of beautiful and unique boats nestled together for the night.

NBTG SC Sunset3. Fort Tabor/Rodman, New Bedford

Just minutes away from East Beach awaits the National Historic Fort Taber/Fort Rodman military base and Public Park located at Clark’s Point in New Bedford. Be sure to look through the binoculars on the pier and watch the sunset over Buzzard’s Bay and the Elizabeth Islands. I feel grateful to live so close to this treasured attraction holding so much heroic history. It’s as if I’m paying respect to those who fought for my freedom while enjoying a quiet sunset.

LITTLE RIVER NBTG4. Little River Bridge, Dartmouth

Take a stroll around and discover your own path to a peaceful sun setting over the salt grass marsh. Absorb the panoramic view of 525 acres of publicly accessible open space at the head of the Little River estuary, which juts out into the Little River, to the Cornell Farm to the east and the Frank Knowles/Little River Reserve. The sunset over the bridge creates a picturesque scene to snap a shot fit to frame for a lasting memory and souvenir!

NBTG HORSENECK5. Westport Point/Horseneck Beach, Westport

Westport Point is a beautiful coastal historic village located on the peninsula formed by the Noquochoke River (East Branch of the Westport River) and the Acoxsett River (West Branch of the Westport River). Grab a blanket and head down to one of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the South Coast-Horseneck Beach! Watch the sunset over the open ocean and listen to the constant rhythmic sound of the waves crashing onto the shore. You will most likely get the added bonus of watching a local kite board or surfing session!

Cape_Cod_Bourne_Bridge_and_Railroad_Bridge6. Cape Cod Canal, Buzzards Bay

Of course I saved the best for last! My absolute favorite South Coast spot to watch the sunset is undoubtedly the candid canal! The Cape Cod Canal is an artificial waterway that joins Cape Cod to mainland Massachusetts and is approximately 7 miles long. Walk along the canal jetty or relax on a bench and observe the ocean current change direction every six hours! The Sagamore and Railroad bridges are visible from the Buzzards Bay canal entrance. I love to catch the train bridge drop down and the dinner train ride by creating the PERFECT picture that will remain a mental image warranting serious bragging rights!
