Holiday Inspired Weekend Events
Looking to spend a weekend filled with holiday events for the family? Halloween is here, Thanksgiving is on the way in a matter of weeks and Christmas is less than 60 days away, there is hardly time to enjoy all the great events that are popping up everyday! This upcoming November weekend is perfect for you and the family to have a day out filled with fun events. The following are some great South Coast happenings that are guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit!
It’s All About The Animals’ Kitty Christmas Open House and Holiday Event is an extremely heart felt event that supports an amazing cause. It will be held this weekend on November 2 from 11a.m to 4p.m. It is their 3rd annual open house. It is free and filled with hay rides, face painting, wonderful Celtic music by Jay and Abbey Michaels and a special surprise visit from Santa Claus! There will also be a book signing with trilogy author Pat Perry and children’s author and illustrator, Carla Marrero, so don’t forget to bring the kids! Come on down and visit with all the cats and kittens that are available for adoption! They will be accepting adoption applications at the event. The fee for kittens under 6 months is $150 and cats over 6 months are $130. These fees cover the cats and kitten’s spay or neuter, vaccines, deworming, de-fleaing, and more.
I have had the pleasure to know and volunteer with It’s All About The Animals shelter. The shelter is a no kill, 501c3, non profit shelter, centered around giving homeless adult cats and kittens the opportunity to find loving homes with sweet and loving owners. They are a public charity and welcome any forms of donations such as food, litter, medications, equipment and volunteer time.
Pam Robinson and her husband, Oren, single handedly take care of over 40 cats and kittens daily. They wake up at 8a.m and end the day at 9p.m for 7 days a week. Pam makes sure each of her cats get fed, cleaned, have fresh water in their bowls, have all their medications updated, and have a nice, clean shelter to live in. She desperately welcomes volunteers to help clean, feed and play with the cats. When asked what this shelter means to Pam, she said,
“This shelter is my life. I can’t put into words how much this shelter means to me. It was something I’ve always wanted to start and my goal was to just help the abused and abandoned. Every time I send a cat to their forever home, it feels like I’ve won the Lottery.” So don’t be shy about sponsoring, donating or just supporting this wonderful shelter!
Are you looking for a more active day out? How about joining Wareham’s first Grumpy’s Cranberry Harvest 5k Trail Run/Walk on November 2nd? It is perfect for all you nature lovers out there and it is such a sight to see with the beautiful cranberry bogs that line the entire trail. It is the perfect atmosphere for a moreThanksgiving feel and it is a great opportunity to catch up with the family. You can also learn some fun berry facts along the trail and receive special goodies such as an event t-shirt, cranberry themed refreshments and children get to make their own “Cranberry Bog in a Cup”. Try to register in advance to save $10 off your ticket! The price is $25 for adults in advance and $35 on the race day while children 4 to 9 are $15. The race begins at 9a.m.
Another great event that gives off a wonderful feel for Thanksgiving is Westport River’s Hayrides. It is every Saturday from 12p.m to 4:30p.m until November 23rd. The ride is approximately 30 minutes long and is only $5 for everyone and children under 2 can ride free. It is the perfect opportunity to see the vineyard with the family!
If you also find yourself having empty spaces in your day, come on down and visit Saint Anthony’s of Padua Church in New Bedford for their annual Holiday Bazaar. The Bazaar will open at 9a.m and close at 6p.m. Like every year, Saint Anthony’s has raffles, arts and crafts and an overall fun family atmosphere.
One of my personal favorite events to see whenever Halloween comes to town is Roger Williams Zoo’s Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, the amazing display of 5,000 hand carved Jack-O-Lanterns lights up the entire trail through the Zoo. Every year the pumpkins are always carved into something different and for this year, they have decide each pumpkin will represent the regions of the United States. Surrounded by all the zoo’s animals gives the trail a more eerie vibe and in order to make it even more scary, my family and I like to go around 9p.m, when some of the last admissions are being let in. Because Daylight Savings Time is coming to an end, 9p.m is a perfect time for complete darkness. With only the illuminated pumpkins to guide you through the trail, it not only gives you the perfect, spooky feeling of Halloween but also the details on the pumpkins become much more vivid.
One of the most spectacular aspects of the trail is their grand finale called the Laughing Tree. Filled with fog and creepy music of a man’s laughter with a catchy beat, the trees surrounding the area are filled with pumpkins top to bottom. They also have pumpkins right in front of the trees that are over 1,000 pounds, all carved into creative and Halloween inspired Jack-O-Lantern faces. It is definitely a sight to be seen and something every family should see at least once. Though, the night time might be a little too late for children, no part of the display is too scary. It is filled with much more awe and amazement and a fun, lighthearted Halloween feeling all around.
Now you and the family will definitely have a busy weekend ahead of you with all our great holiday inspired weekend events here in the South Coast. Don’t forget to check in with the New Bedford Travel Guide for further detail on each event or to check out even more local holiday happenings.
