Getting Lost in Fall’s Foliage

This past weekend, I found myself with some extra time on my hands. With Fall here, I decided to explore Dartmouth’s beautiful back roads. The South Coast’s Fall foliage provides plenty of great opportunities for leaf peeping anywhere. Being more familiar with the North Dartmouth area, I considered taking a drive toward Hixville Village to enjoy the terrific winding roads through the forest. On this day, however, I decided to make it a point to get lost!

The first step in getting lost was to simply start driving around South Dartmouth. Starting out in Padnaram, the first sight I enjoyed was Apponagansett Bay while driving over the bridge on Gulf Road. After driving through a densely populated stretch of housing on Gulf Road, I reached the famous Davoll’s General Store, and went down Slades Corner Road. I turned off my radio, silenced my phone, and enjoyed the ride!

At this time in the year, the leaves are only starting to change colors, but the combination of various landscapes along the road still made for a charming view. Living in the city, you almost forget that houses and other properties can add just as much to a sightseeing experience as nature. Developments with cookie-cutter houses every few feet can bore a spectator to tears, but the houses along the roads of South Dartmouth were amazing! Whether it was their rustic appeal or their distinctive characteristics, almost every house was its own work of art. Stone walls, farm houses, and even windmills were aplenty.

Once I reached Division Road, I decided to chicken out, so I turned around and headed back. I reached the Davoll’s General Store again, but instead of heading back home on Russells Mills Road, I took the right onto Horseneck Road. Immediately I saw a small park called the Russells Mills Landing. It had a nice little playground, some benches, and some picnic tables, but what drew me in was its location along the Pakamansett River. While I walked along the river, I noticed an egret splashing around in the water and a hawk gliding near the trees above. Being around wildlife and this pleasantly calm river almost made my trip worth it alone. However, I had to move on!

After leaving Russells Mills Landing, I continued down Horseneck Road, passing extensive farm lands with Pakamansett River winding behind them. These kinds of images would be picturesque in almost any season, as the backcountry of Dartmouth, and maybe Westport at this point, show off their beauty.

Finally deciding it was time to go home, and running out of gas, I pulled out my GPS and found my way back to the city. These spectacular views aren’t too far from the hustle and bustle of Route 6, so you can ditch the car for a nice bike ride around Dartmouth’s winding roads for an even greater experience!

Manage the Mayhem this Holiday Season

From the first Halloween trick-or-treater to midnight on New Year’s eve, navigating the holiday season is like being thrown into a health defying video game. We are forced to dodge calorie crazed villains at every turn. From the left come armies of candy corn and Kit-Kats. From the right fly Thanksgiving left overs that last weeks and apple pies on a mission. And straight ahead, rolling towards you like the giant bone crushing sphere from Raiders of the Lost Ark, come the endless celebrations of December with all the trimmings. Meanwhile, family obligations, time constraints, and financial stress pursue us mercilessly.

Yes, I exaggerate. In fact, I adore these fall and early winter months for all of the joy, love, and magic they bring. However, to avoid waking up on New Year’s day five pounds heavier, hundreds of dollars in debt, and sporting a few extra grays, you need to have a plan. Take heart. Enjoying all the delights the holidays have to offer while keeping a balance between willy-nilly and wellness is absolutely possible.

Follow these principles and skillfully traverse the temptations of the season.

Stress Less: Start by setting the tone. While you still have the time and money, invest in things that will support your serenity in the coming months. Visit your local bookstore or library to pick up some materials to create your own brand of calm. A meditation CD, a good novel or two, or a book of home spa recipes can help to create a stress relief plan that suites you. Stock up on soothing bath products or candles. Perhaps time in nature or extra sleep is what calms you. It is important to know what your own holiday stress triggers are before the season begins in order to create a solid plan to balance them with those things that bring you peace.

Move It!: With the arrival of colder weather and shorter days, many of us start to slow down, but this is the time to amp up the exercise. There are plenty of places on the South Coast to move your body regardless of what’s going on outdoors. If you can tolerate the cold, there’s nothing like a winter hike to feed your body and soul. The Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust maintains acres of nature preserve including a dozen local hiking areas such as Destruction Brook Woods in Dartmouth. If you are not a fan of the frosty air, invest in a membership at one of the many gyms or sports complexes on the South Coast or try something different like a trip to Carabiner’s Indoor Climbing Gym in New Bedford. Just keep moving! This is also the time of year when extra attention to what we are eating is critical. Keep your body full of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Buy locally when you can at places like How on Earth store and kitchen.

Prioritize: Sometimes we forget that how we spend our time over the holidays is our choice. Say it with me…”It is my choice!” Easier said than done, I know. However, the more you control your schedule, the happier and healthier you will be. Think about the people who are most important to you and the activities you truly enjoy. Build your schedule around them. You do not have to accept every invitation that comes your way. If you are choosy, you will reap the benefits of quality time with friends and family.

Pass the Glass: Finally, consider cutting back on the beverages. That extra glass of wine or beer adds empty calories, inhibits judgement which can lead to overeating, and family feuds. It also zaps the energy you’ll need to enjoy all the holiday hoopla. Make a decision before you head out as to how many glasses of your favorite libation you will have and try alternating alcoholic with non-alcoholic drinks to keep you hydrated.

The wilds of the holiday season are no match for your commitment to wellness and balance. Enjoy!

Leaf Peeping Possibilities

Like sunsets, lightening storms, and gently falling snow, fall foliage is a sensory gift for those lucky enough to be on the South Coast this month. This natural work of art is only on display for a short while, so drop what you are doing and get out there before the curtain has closed on the amazing show.

Most of us are used to leaf peeping through the windshields of our automobiles, a fine way to enjoy fall foliage. However, we encourage you to open your mind and consider what you might be missing if you remain in your car for the next two weeks. Consider some of these leaf peeping alternatives and enjoy autumn on the South Coast at every angle!

Pedestrian Peeping: Peeping on foot adds to your sensory experience. Walk around your neighborhood, your campus, or ideally along a woodland path to get the full effect. On foot you are near enough to the trees to smell their earthiness and hear the changing leaves rustling. When you are speeding by in the car, it is hard to even identify the type of tree beneath its bright red or yellow. Appreciate the gorgeous red maple leaves and the golden yellows of the changing cherry trees up close. Hear the crunch of the fallen leaves beneath your feet and don’t forget to look down. You are walking along a rainbow path.

Pedal Peeping: Combine your leaf peeping with a bike ride. The Phoenix-Mattapoisett Rail Trail offers a 4.5 mile ride between Fairhaven and Mattapoisett. Cycling combines the speed of driving with the multi-sensory experience of walking. See more while still getting outside where the miracle is happening! If you need to rent a bike, check out Yesteryear Cyclery in New Bedford.

Panaromic Peeping: What does autumn look like from above? It’s not the cheapest way to peep, but if you have the means, it is a breathtaking perspective of the change of seasons. From New Bedford, you can hop a hot air balloon to take in the scenery. Balloon Adventures of New Bedford will take you up, up, and away for an hour over Dartmouth, Westport, Little Compton, Portsmouth, and Newport.

Paddle Peeping: Some of the most beautiful scenery on the South Coast can only be seen from our local rivers and ponds. Surround yourself with the hues of fall as you glide along the water’s surface in a kayak, canoe, or any watercraft of your choice. Rent your own ride from outfitters like Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures or join in a group event like the Lloyd Environmental Center’s annual fall foliage canoe tour on October 20th.

Pavement Peeping: Last but not least, let us not forget the tried and true leaf peeping strategy… the road trip. The South Coast is full of gently winding country roads that allow you take in all the beauty our region has to offer. Drives like Rock O’Dundee Road in Dartmouth and Drift Road in Westport are charming with historic houses, farm land, and stone walls. These types of roads are all over the South Coast, so grab a map and a snack and drive! Make the ride more interesting by including stops at great autumn haunts like Davoll’s General Store.

There is a leaf peeping style for every one. Take you pick or try them all!

Fall: Home of Great Beer!

While other seasons have their strengths, like summer’s warm weather or winter’s holiday spirit, fall triumphs head and shoulders over every other time of the year in the category of beer! Other seasonal beers often leave something to be desired with disappointing flavors, but Fall beers are often packed with flavor. Oktoberfest, the most popular style of Fall beer, originates from the German tradition of Oktoberfest, which is one of the world’s largest fairs held in Munich.

Many American breweries have since created their own take on Oktoberfest beers that have since made the style a huge success. Since many breweries also make pumpkin beers during the fall as well, some people confuse the styles. So if you dislike everything pumpkin from pie to beverages, don’t be afraid to buy an Oktoberfest beer!

Every Oktoberfest beer is different depending on the company that makes it. Sam Adams makes one of the most popular Oktoberfest beers in America, which can be found in just about any bar, pub, or liquor store. But, if you want to try some hidden gems of the Oktoberfest beers, you have to search harder. Liquor stores like Town Liquors in Dartmouth and Barry’s Fine Wine & Spirits in New Bedford have some of the best selections of local and craft beers all year. Wachusett Brewing Co., Left Hand Brewing Co., and Leinenkugel’s Brewing Co. make some of my favorite Oktoberfest beers that aren’t too hard to find.

Pumpkin ales are a completely different story. While many brewing companies don’t make Oktoberfest styles at all, other companies will make multiple pumpkin beers. Shipyard’s Pumpkinhead Ale is one of the more popular pumpkin beers in the South Coast, but their Smashed Pumpkin is actually the company’s masterpiece. Dogfish Head, a company known for great beers, makes one of my favorite seasonal brews, Punkin Ale beer.

It just wouldn’t be fair if these delicious beers were only available in liquor stores. Many of downtown New Bedford’s pubs and bars include great selections of these and other Oktoberfest and pumpkin beers. Rose Alley Ale House features one of the best selections of beers on tap to go along with their consistently great atmosphere, with live music played on the weekends. The Pour Farm Tavern is one of my favorite places to go with great beer and live musicians. A great opportunity to try some seasonal brews along with other activities and food to eat can be found at the New Bedford Oktoberfest.

You don’t need a plane ticket to Germany to get a great Oktoberfest experience. Stay in the South Coast and enjoy the local take on tasty beer, food, and tradition!

Outdoor Fun!

Parks are awesome, plain and simple. Whether you want to play basketball, frisbee, soccer, or just want to lay down in a big field of grass, the South Coast has more than enough options to meet your outdoor needs. You can find a lot of great places to go easily, but sometimes the hidden gems are even better!

Buttonwood Park in New Bedford clearly stands out as one of the area’s bigger parks. With multiple baseball fields, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, and even the zoo, a family could easily spend a whole day at Buttonwood. The fields at Buttonwood have enough open space for any kind of activities you could want, with groups like little league football and baseball teams practicing there seasonally. Also, the pond at Buttonwood makes a great spot to just sit and relax.

Fairhaven‘s more beautiful recreation areas can be found at Fort Phoenix. Located near the water, Fort Phoenix offers great views, along with tennis and basketball courts, beach areas, a playground, and even spots to fish! After you soak up some of the military history of the Fort, grab some friends and have a game of ultimate frisbee in the park area. The ocean breeze makes things a little more interesting!

Now, don’t let those college kids intimidate you, but UMass Darmtouth has great open fields to enjoy! Along with some decent basketball courts and an outdoor street hockey rink, the only problem you might encounter is parking during the school year. The campus police give tickets to cars without a UMass parking decal, but they don’t ticket outside of the school year, so make sure to take advantage during the summer if you’re not already student or faculty!

One of my favorite basketball spots can be found off of Slocum Road in Dartmouth. Burgo Basketball Association features some of the best basketball facilities open to the public in the South Coast. With five regulation size courts and a concession stand, BBA is a great spot for children and adults alike to enjoy a pick up game or join one of the BBA’s leagues. It can get busy at Burgo’s, but with five full-size courts it isn’t a problem to find an open spot or join a group for a game.

While Burgo Basketball Association can be hard to find, the place I like to call the “Purple Dinosaur Park” in Dartmouth is next to impossible to find unless you already know it’s there! Officially, it’s called the Dartmouth Regional Park & Trails, but I still prefer Purple Dinosaur Park. The DRPT is hidden off of Old Fall River Road, on a side road with several speed bumps. Once you finish the tedious task of driving over all the bumps, you’ll find a beautiful park in the woods of Dartmouth. The park includes basketball courts (of course), a two baseball fields, a sand volleyball court, a covered picnic area, hiking trails, and a very nice playground area complete with, you guessed it, a purple Tyrannosaurus Rex! The purple dinosaur is really only big enough for children to play on, but you can still dream!

If you want to go on an adventure or if you just want a quick spot to enjoy the outdoors, the South Coast has you covered. Beautiful scenery and great public facilities makes this area’s parks top notch!

Vegan Friendly South Coast

veg·an (vēgən,ˈvejən/) noun– a person who does not eat or use animal products.

This summer we decided to adopt a vegan diet, my mother in law looked at us with disbelief and asked “What are you going to grill…twigs??” For a year afterwards, our invitations for family dinners were met with skepticism and inquiries into each detail of the menu. The use of tofu as meat substitute, soy butter on bread, or almond milk in coffee needed to be discussed and compromises rendered before our nearest and dearest would brave our kitchen table. Thanksgiving at our home was the annual tradition, and as the holiday approached anxiety was increasing and relatives were organizing. The absence of meat on a plate seems to make people very uneasy. In his most recent book VB6 (Vegan Before 6:00), Mark Bittman notes that only 49% of Americans ate even one single salad in the past two weeks!

It’s been three years since the introduction of the word “vegan” into our family’s vocabulary, and as it turns out, I’m more of a flextarian with vegan aspirations. However, it does us, the planet, and our animal friends good to eat as many vegan meals as we can. According to Dosomething.org, over 10 billion animals are raised for dairy, eggs, and meat each year. Growing the crops to feed them uses fossil fuels that emit 90 million tons of C02 annually. The enormous amount of waste produced from these billions of animals is polluting our ground water. The more animal products we eat, the more factory farms will produce, and the more we damage our planet with each meal. Moreover, many animals raised for consumption live a terrible life, and as uncomfortable as this makes us, we aid in the abuse each time we choose an animal based meal.

For those of you who are conscious of your health and the health of your planet, here are some places where you have the choice to eat vegan dishes. Remember, every time you choose not to each animal products you are changing the world for the better.

Panera Bread, Dartmouth: Stop in for a piping hot bowl of their black bean or garden vegetable soups. Order a sour dough roll or French baguette for dunking! In fact, many of their breads are vegan. You can see all the ingredients for their menu items at www.panera nutrition.com. We applaud for Panera’s help in allowing us to make educated choices about the food we eat.

How on Earth, Mattapoisett: How on Earth is both a market and a restaurant, so if you like what you taste, you can purchase local ingredients to recreate recipes at home. Try the wild rice and plum salad with local greens, sweet potatoes and white balsamic vinaigrette or the orange cashew salad. If you are in the mood for a sandwich, they offer a vegan burger and vegetarian burrito that you can “veganize” by simply omitting the sour cream.

The Green Bean, New Bedford: Their coffees and specialty lattes can be made with soy milk, and they offer an extensive smoothie menu plus fresh fruit and veggie juices.

Mirasol’s Café, Dartmouth: Mirasol’s is a Latin American influenced café that makes some great vegan soups like their curry lentil and 16 bean soup. Their unique veggie wrap is made with black beans, scallion-cilantro hummus, Mirasol’s lettuce mix, tomatoes, and marinated onion (breath warning – not the sandwich you want to eat before a date or business meeting!). Consider some vegan treats from the kids menu like a peanut butter and cinnamon banana flauta. If you’re not eating, enjoy a flavored coffee with soy milk.

Spicy Lime Thai Cuisine, New Bedford: The Spicy Lime is a hidden gem you should not miss. Vegans can happily feast at this small but mighty restaurant. Vegan menu options include spring rolls, fresh rolls, spicy fried tofu, and numerous salads (the mango salad is excellent) and main courses which offer your choice of meat or tofu.

No Problemo Taqueria, New Bedford: Mexican restaurants are usually a safe choice for vegans, and No Problemo is a classic. They offer a host of delicious burritos, tacos, and salads which can be vegan if you just hold the cheese and sour cream. Double up on the guacamole instead – yum! Popular ingredients include beans, refried beans, roasted red peppers, spinach, salsa, cucumbers, red onions, cilantro, and lime. What more could you ask for?

Lebanese Pita Pocket, Dartmouth: Family owned and operated, this is a great stop for a quick and healthy vegan meal. It is always nice to be able to choose from more than a lettuce and tomato sandwich or a plain garden salad when you eat out. Here you can take your pick from many vegan options including pumpkin kibbeh (hold the yogurt), vegetarian stuffed grape leaves, hummus and tabbouli, mjadra (lentil beans, rice, sautéed onions and spices), and falafel.

Gone are the days when your polite refusal of an animal based plate evokes the puzzled response “But it’s not meat, it’s chicken!” Local restaurants are becoming more aware of the vegetarian and vegan consumer which means greater choices for us! Eat up and report back. We welcome your comments and additional recommendations for vegan eating on the South Coast.

The Art of Local Travel

The New Bedford Travel Guide is a meeting place for travelers. Travel is often measured by distance, length of stay, or novelty of your destination. For some, it is not considered travel unless it took you over seven hours to get there, you need to sleep away from home, or you eat something that you cannot pronounce. I beg to differ. It is not the hours in the air or the food on your plate that you are craving when you get the itch to travel; it is how those things make you feel. We travel to get away from our daily routines. We travel to have new experiences. We travel to reinvent or rediscover ourselves.

If we had our way, we would travel whenever the spirit moves us without concern for finances or time constraints. We would revel in discovery and enjoy novelties every week instead of the one or two weeks we carve out for vacation each year. Guess what? You can be a year round traveler without leaving the South Coast. Save your money, save your vacation time, and get ready to rediscover the place you’ve been living in all along.

Skilled local travelers have learned to recreate the sense of long distance adventure without the distance. The easiest way to do this is to consider your expectations, behavior, and state of mind when you are on vacation and replicate these at home. In other words, proceed with a traveler’s mind set. Remember these four habits of mind as you embark on your local travels and enjoy your South Coast adventures each and every weekend!

Be present and slow down: If you were traveling to Egypt to see the great pyramids, you bet your bippee you would pay attention when you got there. Give Mattapoisett the same attention and you may be surprised what you find. Worthy travelers do not bring work, chores, bills, or other obligations on their journey when they visit Bora-Bora. Turn off your cell phone and leave your worries behind when you head to New Bedford as well if you truly want to travel. Meander though the South Coast with mindful awareness to see novelty in things you thought you knew like the back of your hand. You may have walked the streets of New Bedford a hundred times, but have you noticed the details in the architecture of the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park? You will be able to pay more attention to your surroundings if you slow down and actually take a look around! Soak it all in and savor the details. If you were visiting Paris, wouldn’t you stop every few hours to sit leisurely at a sidewalk café and talk about what you’ve been seeing? Do the same thing locally and change your energy from that of tourist to traveler. Order a specialty latte at one of the many local coffee shops in the area and just sit and enjoy your day off. You can’t go wrong with a stop at the Green Bean in New Bedford, Mirasol’s Café in Dartmouth, or Uncle Jon’s Coffee & Café in Marion.

Move beyond the familiar: There are 263 New Bedford restaurant listings on Trip Advisor. I dare you to tell me you have tried them all. What about all the restaurants in Marion, Wareham, Mattapoisett, and Dartmouth? What about all of the shops, attractions, and events in these towns? What about just a quarter of them. You see where I’m going with this. You haven’t even touched the tip of the iceberg that is the South Coast. We travel to try new things, so try new things! Go down that street you always pass but never turn on to. Walk into that hole in the wall restaurant that looks interesting and peruse their menu. Take a chance on an activity that you have never experienced. Have you ever played 3D glow in the dark indoor mini golf? Try Ocean’s 18. Never took a walking tour of your own town? Visit some of our town centers like Adamsville Village, Long Plain Village or Hixville Village. Or maybe you are looking for that dish you can’t pronounce and will tell your friends about later. Try some of the great ethnic restaurants in the area like the Spicy Lime Thai Cuisine, No Problemo Taqueria, or the Zen Asian Grille and Sushi Lounge.

Connect with people: Sometimes we treat people differently when we are on vacation. We take out our happy, excited, relaxed vacation persona and are kind to passersby, store clerks, and stray animals. The cashier at your local convenience store…not so much. Of course you are not rude, but do you engage that way you would with a mysterious stranger selling jewelry in Barcelona? Be honest. People are what make our travels the most interesting. Engage a little with the sommelier at a local winery or the owner of one of the many great pizzerias on the South Coast. You never know what you’ll learn.

Expect to get what you came for: The anticipation leading up to a week of vacation is almost as sweet as the get-away itself. You are so excited for the relaxation, the quality time with friends or family, and the plans you have made. Treat your local travels with the same expectancy. Put aside the whole day to adventure and enjoy. Expect to learn something. Expect to have fun.
