New Bedford: Historic Architecture

The Beginning

The city of New Bedford dates back to the Colonial years, when the land was purchased in 1652 from the Wampanoag tribes, whom called the area “Acushnet” or “Cushnea”. The territory was later named Old Dartmouth in 1664, which included present day New Bedford, Dartmouth, Westport, and Fairhaven.

Joseph Russell, who owned much of the land around what is County, Spring, and Elm Street today, built his home on County Street, and by 1750, Joseph Russell III designed plans for village streets and house lots near the shore area of the family property. In 1760, a shipbuilder by the name of John Loudon, purchased the first plot of land from the Russells and built his home on what is Water Street today.

Other craftsmen soon followed Loudon in purchasing lots and building homes in the area, and established the young village’s growing industry. Joseph Rotch named the small town Bedford, after the Duke of Bedford in England, who’s family name was Russell. Rotch is credited with bringing improved whaling methods to the town, which formerly only used smaller ships for trips closer to the shore.

Town Destruction

After becoming annoyed with the Revolution, the English raided the Bedford Village in 1778, destroying most ships and buildings, which included the original Loudon and Rotch homes. With the destruction of most of the town’s industry, Bedford’s prosperity came to a halt, as a whaling vessel wouldn’t leave the town for seven years. After the American Revolution ended, Bedford rebuilt and officially became the town of New Bedford in 1787, to differentiate it from the town of Bedford located near Boston.

Reviving A Community

Once the 1800’s arrived, New Bedford’s flourishing whaling industry opened the door for the many beautiful buildings still around today. Since most of the Colonial period building were destroyed, the oldest building style you’ll find are Federal Period. This usually included “balustraded low hip roofs, elaborate fences and magnificently detailed porticos and front entries.”Federal Period style of buildings were popular from 1785 until around 1820, where the Greek Revival Period began.

Thomas Jefferson played a major role in bringing the architecture styles of ancient Rome and Greece to New Bedford. He dislike Colonial, or Georgian style and Federal styles, and saw the Greek style to be fitting for the freed democratic nation. The most obvious Greek Revival building can be found in public buildings, with their large columns and classic temple design, but the Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum also gives a fantastic example of this style of architecture. The Greek Revival period stayed in popularity until 1850, with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. As technology advanced rapidly in America, the Victorian style of housing thrived with it, which combined many different aspects of past styles to create truly individual and captivating houses. The Melville House, located on Madison Street, is a perfect example of Victorian architecture, and is now run as a bed and breakfast. Captain Haskell’s Octagon House on Union Street provides another beautiful and unique Victorian era house, which also runs as a bed and breakfast.

Many of these historic buildings are located downtown in New Bedford’s Historic District, but many interesting historic houses can be found throughout the city. This mix of different eras of architecture and structure give New Bedford a truly unique feel to the city, whether you come to visit or live here your whole life. There are few places quite like it.

Writing for Your Business

Did you know that taking advantage of writing opportunities can be one of the best forms of marketing and advertising for you and your business? Articles for newsletters, business sections of your local newspaper, online sites like New Bedford Travel Guide, and trade journals are all terrific outlets for informing the public about your areas of expertise.

Oftentimes, writing about topics that interest you or that you feel passionate about—even if they’re not business-related–have the same beneficial effect as those business-related topics you might prefer to focus on. They give your readers another perspective about who you are and they provide insights into your life and personality that might otherwise not be known. Talk about free publicity!

Now listen, I don’t want to hear the BIG excuse: you don’t know how to write. Neither do I want to hear that you can’t spell or you don’t know anything about punctuation and grammar. Do you really think Hemingway, Stephen King, and Nora Roberts were born with such skills? Did you ever hear about the dictionary, the thesaurus, and spell-check?

The best way to refine your article while making sure your spelling, punctuation, and grammar are perfect is to have another person edit it. Be sure you choose the right person—not your mother, spouse, or best friend. You should choose someone who writes, and writes well, and who knows the business of writing. In case you haven’t noticed, other people tend to have an easier time spotting our faults than we do. They also tend to be freer with praise.

Why not give it a try? I’d recommend starting out small, like with a newsletter article or a letter to the editor. Stick to 100-250 words. If you feel you need to brush up on your grammar and punctuation skills, Elements of Style by William Strunk and E.B. White is the book you need. The paperback version costs less than $10 at Barnes and Noble. I still have the first copy I bought over 30 years ago. (It was much cheaper then.) Other resources are available online; check them out to see what best fits your personality and level of skill. If you feel you need some help with creativity, then Writing the Natural Way by Gabriele L. Rico is the book; the paperback version costs less than $20. Lawrence Block’s Telling Lies for Fun and Profit is also a great investment.

Happy writing!

269145_526658820682200_490912964_n

Any sushi lovers out there? Zen is located in Wareham and is filled with fresh sushi but my personal favorite will always be their California Roll. Though their signature rolls can get quite pricey, Zen’s classic rolls are just as amazing and range from $3.50 to $7.00. They also have spicy rolls to choose from, with many options like salmon, scallop, yellow tail and much more! Just in case you wanted to spice up your meal!

The Great American Burger – Freestone’s City Grill

Freestone’s can definitely be on the pricey side but if you want more of a fancy night out, then look nowhere else. Though most meals tend to be around $15, if you search their menus throughly, you will notice a yummy selection of burgers and sandwiches around $9. Their Great American Burger comes in at only $8.99 with a 10 ounce burger that has traditional cheese, lettuce & onions on a bulky roll. Or possibly even try their Carter Classic that is topped with cheddar, bacon and BBQ sauce all with the same price of $8.99!

The Undertaker – Pier 37

409446_301997959862133_1787297207_n

Pier 37 will always make for a fantastic night out, located in downtown New Bedford, right near the Acushnet River. Their signature hot dogs are to die for! All of their dogs are 1/4 lb. served on a toasted torpedo roll and you can choose from regular fries, sweet potato fries or some potato chips. Their Undertaker is definitely a sight to be held. It is a hot dog potato skin piled with mashed potatoes, bacon, green onions, cheddar cheese and sour cream. The delicious dog costs exactly $9, but that is considered to be one of their more expensive hot dogs. Most are $8 or even $7.

Pepperjack Mac and Cheese – Ice House Bar & Grille

Located in Fairhaven, Ice House Bar & Grille has a large selection of burgers, pizza, wings, sandwiches, soups and salads and the majority of all meals are under $8.95. But I highly suggest trying out one of their house plates, Pepperjack Mac and Cheese. Coming in at only $7.95, it’s comfort food with a twist! Perfect for all of those wanting to try something different while mixing up your taste buds.

End Zone Chicken – End Zone

Looking for a fun night out that is dedicated to watching your favorite sports team? Endzone is the place to be! Their sandwiches are delicious and their most expensive ones are only $8.99! You have got to try their End Zone chicken made with marinated chicken, sautéed onions, mushrooms and cheese. All sandwiches include fries and you have a choice of white, wheat, marble rye or Portuguese roll.

Sweet and Sour Chicken – Wasabi

Wasabi is located in Dartmouth and has a great mixture of Japanese and Chinese cuisine. My personal favorite is their Sweet and Sour Chicken for only $8.50. Wasabi is also right near UMass Dartmouth so it’s the perfect place for college students. Being a college student, I know there is nothing more on a college student’s mind than saving some cash!

1375314_10151614064277172_1730234732_nQueen Margherita – Fay’s Restaurant

Tasty Burger Spots

Craving a good burger? While there are more than enough fast food places to choose from, most of them hand you a dull burger and send you on your way. Quick, easy, and often times, flavorless! But if you’re looking for a quality burger in a great environment, there are plenty great locations in the South Coast to choose from.

Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Dartmouth

Don’t be fooled by their chain of restaurants nationwide, Five Guys Burgers & Fries still makes great food. New customers might hesitate to build their dream burger at first, but you might just learn something new about yourself there. Should you use BBQ sauce? Is adding jalepeno peppers a good idea for my burger? Whatever you want to try, you can add as many toppings as you want. They say there’s over 250,000 ways to order a burger at Five Guys, so chances are good they can make your dream burger into reality.

Rose Alley Ale House, New Bedford

Rose Alley Ale House is known for good beer and great times. Live music on the weekends and numerous craft beers on tap make it hard not to have fun there. As if it couldn’t get any better, they serve delicious food there too! Rose Alley offers a variety of dishes, but having one of their burgers with a good draft beer is an experience all on its own. They don’t list them as “Prime Burgers” for no reason. You can custom make one, or choose from their specialties that are all amazing. I would suggest the Rose Alley Burger with one of their Ommegang beers on tap, but life is about tough choices, so sit back, relax, and find your own favorite combination.

Max’s, Dartmouth

Max’s restaurant on the side of Route 6 is easy to miss, but hard to forget once you’ve eaten there. Their list of specialty burgers has something for every taste, with choices like Portuguese, Hawaiian, Philly, and even Veggie burgers! For those brave enough to take on their ultimate test, Max’s also offers the B.A.B Challenge! See if you can eat their massive mountain of burger and fries in under 12 minutes and secure your place on Max’s Wall of Fame. If you’re not looking for a challenge, you can just grab a great cheeseburger and watch the game at Max’s.

End Zone Sports Pub, New Bedford

The End Zone Sports Pub features a lot of food you would expect to find at a sports bar. Wings, pizza, burgers, and more, but that doesn’t do the End Zone’s dishes justice. Their specialty burgers, along with giant televisions around the restaurant, make it a great place to eat and watch the game. You could even eat their Red Sox Burger while watching the Red Sox! Red Sox overload perhaps? Try something different, like their Big Texan Burger or End Zone Burger.

Freestones City Grill, New Bedford

Freestones, located on the cobble stone streets of Downtown New Bedford, doesn’t seem like the perfect burger place, with their variety of other dishes, but their burgers are just as good as everything else they make. Freestones offers a few different burgers that are simply awesome! Choices like their Bacon Blue Burger, topped with crumbled blue cheese and bacon, along with their great atmosphere inside make for a great overall experience for a date, family night, or even just going out with some good friends.

Flavors of Fall

Autumn is a great time to enjoy the creative menus being offered all around the South Coast. Chefs are making magic with seasonal produce like apples, pumpkin, and butternut squash. There is so much more to fall food than turkey and apple pie. Dig in and find out for yourself!

Diners at The Pasta House in Fairhaven go for the classic Italian food and warm atmosphere of the brick and wood beam interior. During the fall season, you may want to go just for the sublime martinis!

Their seasonal drink menu includes a Pumpkin Pie Martini (pumpkin liqueur, Irish cream, vanilla liqueur, Buttershots, with a graham cracker rim and cinnamon sprinkle), an Apple-Disiac Martini (Stoli Apple, coffee liqueur, apple cider, splash of cream, with an apple slice), and a Banana Bread Martini (Crème de Banana, Buttershots, Crème de Cacao, Frangelico, and Bailey’s, with a graham cracker rim). The seasonal food menu is just as good with an Apple Glazed Salmon (baked with apples and brown sugar glaze), a Tuscan Harvest Salad (harvest mix, bacon, craisins, glazed almonds, apples, gorgonzola cheese, honey maple dressing), and seasonal sides like Butternut Risotto and Fried Apple Polenta.

The Airport Grille in New Bedford will surprise you with its modern interior and innovative dishes. On Fridays and Saturdays, the chef creates seasonal specials like Apple Cider Glazed Pork Tenderloin (apple cider reduction sauce, roasted acorn squash and sweet potatoes wedges). Specials change each night so call ahead to find out what’s on the menu! You’ll be glad to know that one of Airport Grille’s regular menu items is their Butternut Squash Ravioli.

For something closer to the sea with a view, try New Bedford’s Waterfront Grille. Their menu is currently featuring Maple Soy Glazed Scallops (with roasted butternut squash, caramelized onion, dried cranberries, candied pecans, and baby bok choy). Be sure to enjoy an Apple Cider Sangria or an Apple Pie Martini while you are waiting for your food to arrive.

Not Your Average Joe’s is keeping with the season serving up their Pumpkin Molé Chicken and Autumn Spice Sangria (a fall blend of house-infused apple-ginger vodka, Shellback Spiced Rum, Carlson Orchards’ apple cider, pomegranate juice, and pinot grigio). If sangria is not your thing, try the Great Pumpkin Martini (Kahlua pumpkin spice, pumpkin liqueur and a splash of cream, rimmed with caramel and graham cracker crumbs).

Bitter Sweet Farm’s monthly menu for October offers delectable dishes such as Harvest Baked Brie stuffed with apples and cinnamon, Pumpkin Ravioli with Italian sausage and fresh apples in a rich cheddar cheese sauce, and Baked Apple stuffed with brown sugar, wrapped in puff pastry and served warm with vanilla bean ice cream.

Of course, if you are on the run, the many wonderful coffee shops in the area are also celebrating the autumn season. Stop by Panera Bread in Dartmouth for their Autumn Squash Soup, Roasted Turkey Harvest Wheatberry Salad, or Pumpkin “Muffie”.

Enjoy!

General Stores: the Heart of our Community

Sometimes it feels as though we are headed towards a world where human beings will have no need to interact. Already we can text instead of talk, follow the orders of our GPS instead of ask directions, buy anything we could possibly need online including groceries, and even graduate from college without ever setting a foot on campus.

General, country, or village stores on the South Coast have always been places where you could go to pick up something you need, catch up on community happenings, and connect with your neighbors all in the same trip. When’s the last time you stopped in the aisle of Target just to chit-chat or dropped by Wal-mart to find out if there was anything exciting going on this weekend? There are now drive-thrus for everything from burgers to antibiotics and box stores around every corner. Despite such competition, general stores are still alive on the South Coast. Drop in and see what makes them so special.

General stores like Davoll’s General Store on Russell’s Mills Road in Dartmouth are a living piece Americana. One of the oldest general stores in the United States, Davoll’s has been in business since 1793. Yes, your math skills are as sharp as ever…that’s two hundred and twenty years old! Visit to see their collection of Byer’s Choice Carolers and Possible Dreams figurines.

Like many general stores, the Head Town Landing Store at the head of the Westport River sells coffee, pastries, pre-made sandwiches and other convenience foods. They also still sell “penny candy” like it was 1905! It cost more than a penny now but the cool retro factor makes it worth every cent. Grab some lunch and licorice then float down the Westport River with a kayak from Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures just across the street.

Years ago, general stores were known for serving as the social and information hub of the town. The Old Company Store on Elm Street in Wareham keeps this tradition alive with their commitment to community. Check out their website to read about how they support their city through PTA fundraisers, bake sales for animal shelters, food and toy drives. The Town Wharf General Store on Water Street in Mattapoisett supports the local community by featuring books by local authors like their newly displayed cookbook, “Hot Sauce!” by Mattapoisett resident Jennifer Trainer Thompson. They also bring unique specialty products from afar back to the South Coast for us to enjoy like Nova Scotia Fishermen Extreme Skin Care and Sailwinds Windjammer bracelets from Maine. Think about a visit to a general store this holiday shopping season!

Of course, general stores have to make some efforts to keep up with the times while holding onto their character. Like many general stores, Partner’s Village Store on Main Road in Westport sells gifts, books, stationary, toys, and food. Like many, they also offer online shopping. However, you can’t smell the baking bread and simmering soup, flip through the pages in their independent book store, or meet your neighbors if you limit your interchange to online shopping. After you log in…get out there and meet these remarkable retailers in person!

General stores are closing all across America. I’m not suggesting you forego your regular Target runs. Just consider opening your shopping habits to include your local general store. Get to know them and get to know a piece of your history.

Ye Old English Getaway

Imagine this: you’re walking in the middle of a huge opened field. There are no roads or any sight of modern technology; you’re surrounded by trees and dirt paths. You look around and you notice something different about the people standing next you. In fact, they are talking kind of funny! Then it clicks, you are back in time in renaissance England! People are dressed in full on medieval style with breeches and gowns, carrying swords and armor. There are wizards, princesses, kings, knights, horses, and tigers, oh my!

With every turn, there is a new adventure to be held. Laughter can be heard in the air from miles away, while commotion and merriment fill every square inch. Of course, I can’t be talking about none other than the King Richard’s Faire, the closest any of us will ever get to a time machine.

Located in Carver, Massachusetts, King Richard’s Faire is the longest running renaissance fair in New England. Established in 1982, it covers 80 acres of land and has over 10 performance stages. They are open from August 31 until October 20, closing only when there is bad weather. Tickets costs $28 for adults and $16 for children. You can get tickets online but there is a fee of $2 and they also have group discounts if you decide to bring the whole family. Make sure you leave your entire day opened since King Richard’s Faire starts at 11 a.m and has events every half hour until 5:30 p.m! And bring some extra cash to buy food, costume rentals and there is bound to be something that catches your eye at their endless shops filled with not so average items.

One of the amazing things about King Richard’s Faire is the freedom of expression you can have while also stepping into this fantasy world. Everyone is there to experience an entirely different kind of lifestyle and no one will ever be judged. If you want to dress up as a princess, lord, lady or pirate, you can! It’s all about reliving in a time that was filled with mystery, magic and

405940_10150508096966814_62563004_nchivalry. Now if you don’t have your own costume, there is no need to worry. King Richard’s Faire has particular shops designed just so you can rent out their costumes (if you don’t want to buy your own of course). Depending on particular outfits, the prices range from $25 to $60, which are entirely worth it.

Though you might feel before you arrive at King Richard’s Faire, that you don’t want to dress up and you prefer your jeans over any 16th century clothing. But give it an hour or so of walking around and seeing everyone else in costume having fun, you’ll be running to the nearest shop asking them to find something in your size. And that has to do with the atmosphere of King Richard’s Faire. You realize right from the start that want to be a part of this world, straight down to the dress code and old English. Remember the saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”?

Another big part of King Richard’s Faire is their food. If you plan on spending your entire day at the fair, you are bound to get hungry and you have to at least try their very own Turkey leg-don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. But don’t worry for all you vegan and vegetarian eaters out there because King Richard’s Faire has their very own gluten-free, vegetarian and lactose free opinions! You can choose from their Canterbury Kitchen, New Castle Grill, desserts and many different options of beer or wine. Each food and beverage cost 1 ticket, which can be purchased in the stands right near the food court. They come in only bundles of 5, so make sure you and the family are extra hungry!

Because King Richard’s Faire covers up 80 acres of forest land, each corner is filled with marketplaces selling items you’ll never see being sold anywhere else! With over 50 shops lined all the way around the fair, there is bound to be something that catches your interest, so make sure you got some spare cash on you! They have stands for just about anything you can think of,

4835_106056166813_1068482_nfrom wooden bows, walking staffs and birdhouses to face or henna tattoos. Jewelry made from pewter, leather and silver, original artwork, and handmade flutes, leather boots, and stained glass fill the stand and are begging to be looked at and admired. If you ever decided to dress up for King Richard’s Faire and have your own costume, particular stands also sell accessories for any olden person you decide to act like that day.

Nothing says King Richard’s Faire better than entertainment. Right from when they start at 11a.m, there will be at least 4 different shows split between their ten stages. Right when you enter King Richard’s Faire, you will be given a list of each entertainment shows that are held every half an hour and a map of the area, showing you exactly where every stage is located. And believe me, their performances are so great, you are going to wish you could have the chance so see all of them! One of my personal favorites are the Washing Well Wenches and The Mud Show (just to name a few!). Both are very interactive, like most of the shows, and are equally hilarious. I will say now, certain shows will make you cringe but it all caters to the hilarity. The performers, though done up in perfect 16th century wear, are friendly, vibrant and talented, all mixed up together in a side-splitting show you will never forget! But don’t forget, that the end of each show every actor will ask for tips to fund their performances. So if you want them to continue on with their talents, make sure you give a good tip!

King Richard’s Faire also has ongoing performances through the 7 hours of it being opened, which is why it is so important to stay to the end. One of their biggest on going performances is the tale of the tiger, where audience members get a close up of the exotic felines, of all colors and sizes! They also have their main attraction, the incredibly rare Liger. Yes, you heard right, a Liger

409548_10150508098191814_1359526883_n which is a cross between a lion and a tiger. This gorgeous cat weight close to 900 pounds and is over 12 feet tall. His name is Hercules and he is 8 years old and definitely a sight to be held. Another on going event that is filled with action, is King Richard’s Faire very own jousting tournament. Each side of the field is assigned a knight and you only know who the winner will be at 5:00 p.m when they have their last battle called “Joust to the Death!”. It is a performance that will keep you and the kids on your feet and cheering your presented knight, just like they did in the 16th century.

King Richard’s Faire also has special events every weekend. Some are on going like their cleavage contest or beard and mustache contest but this year they introduced a new special event based on the popular T.V show, Game of Thrones, where you dress up like your favorite character and whoever had the best costume wins. My very own sister participated in the event as Daenerys Targaryen, but lost to an amazing actor who dressed up as Tyrion Lannister. Definitely a wonderful defeat filled with laughter and praise.

When you see so many people come together for something as fun and favored as Game of Thrones, you can see the connection people have with one another. And that is exactly what King Richard’s Faire does. They bring together people from all walks of life who share a common interest and allow them to participate in this wonderful fantasy world. Definitely something everyone should experience at least once in their life!

That about wraps up my take on the King Richard’s Faire. It is an amazing event filled with adventure that will hold great laughter and memories with you and your family. So come to King Richard’s Faire and express your inner nerd and don’t forget to stop by the New Bedford Travel Guide about any other future events!

South Coast Halloween Happenings

Did you hear that? A creak in the floor, a wind through the trees, and an eerie whisper in the air are all signs that Halloween is right around corner! There is no need to wait until the 31st to get into the spooky spirit. Towns throughout the South Coast are celebrating Halloween all month long.

Residents and visitors of all ages and terror tolerances can find a way to savor the Halloween preliminaries. Here are just a few Halloween happenings on the South Coast in the coming weeks.

Contests: Loitering is allowed in Onset, Wareham and Fairhaven…that is if you’re made of straw. In fact, you can count on sharing the side walk with dozens of scarecrows this month as the their towns host their annual scarecrow contests. Entries for the 1st Annual Onset/Wareham Scarecrow Festival can be seen on Onset Avenue in the village of Onset and on Main Street in Wareham from October 11-31st. Fairhaven’s Scarecrow Contest entries can be admired on the Main Street sidewalk of Fairhaven High School until November 2nd.

Another outlet for those of us with a competitive streak is the Halloween Party and Pumpkin Contest at the Southworth Library in Dartmouth. Pumpkins were traditionally carved and lit from within to welcome deceased loved ones and ward off evil spirits. These are fine uses for Jack-O-Lanterns, as are toasting crispy pumpkin seeds and making pumpkin pies!

Finally, you can enter yourself in the competition by participating in the annual Fairhaven Halloween Horribles Parade. The parade runs from Benoit Square north to St. Mary’s Church and features residents and guests in their Halloween finest. Awards are given for scariest, cutest, and most original costume.

Walks and Rides: If you’re a nature lover, don’t miss the chance to experience some of our beautiful South Coast outdoor environments transformed to celebrate the holiday. Lace up and take a Hairy Scary Halloween Stroll at Peirson Woods off Point Road in Marion led by story teller Toby Dills. For a bewitching wander, attend the Gleason YMCA’s Spooktacular where they will light and decorate their outdoor walking trail as well as offer guided walks through their “Haunted Forest”. This evening event also features children’s activities and refreshments. And if that weren’t enough, “Thriller” dance-alongs will be dispersed throughout the evening. Forget the moves? No worries, the Gleason YMCA is offering a free “Thriller” Dance workshop on Friday October 18 from 4:00-5:00pm. While you’re on YMCA’s website, click “Halloween Happenings” for a full list of Halloween activities at all the South Coast YMCAs.

For a wild ride, head over to the Dartmouth YMCA for their Haunted Barn and Hayride event or enjoy a more subdued ride at Westport Rivers Hayrides. If you are in the New Bedford area, hop a scary train or bewitched carousel at Buttonwood Park Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo event or trick or treat at the Downtown New Bedford’s Halloween Treats event.

Fundraisers and Benefits: If you want to make a difference this Halloween, check out some of the Halloween fundraisers and benefits.

Proceeds from the Goblet and Goblins Wine and Beer Tasting event at the Marion music hall will benefit the Gleason Family YMCA. In addition to beer and wine tasting, guests will enjoy food pairings, chef demonstrations, and tarot and tea leaf readings.

Home Haunt Halloween is a good old fashioned haunted house tour in Fairhaven whose proceeds support the Shriners Children’s Hospitals. Weekends in October, this home is transformed to terrify with decorations, live actors, and plenty of scary surprises.

Happy Halloween!

Great WiFi Hot Spots

Hey all you college kids out there! School is starting to get pretty crazy, huh? All those quizzes, tests and research papers are getting the best of you and it’s only been a month! There is no denying that this is going to be a rough semester, but don’t lose hope! In just a few more years (and maybe only a few months for you lucky ones), you can hold that diploma and officially be a graduate! But until then, we have to study, study, study! Now, a good place would be at home or on campus but sometimes it can get very distracting and become hard to focus. So here is list of South Coast WiFi areas where you can study outside your usual routine.

Being a Umass Dartmouth student, there is no place better for me (and all you other Umass students) than the Claire T. Carney Library. Located right on Umass Dartmouth’s campus and with its 5 floors, there is so much room to study! And of course, the Wifi is free! All you have to do is go to the front desk and they can help you connect to the internet.

208604_181912205190174_278874_nThe Claire T. Carney Library also has a brand new cafe that just opened up right when you walk in and behind that is an opened area of chairs, tables and library books to study with. The ground floor, 1st and 2nd floor are all dedicated to researching with the school’s computers, so don’t worry if you leave yours at home. While the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors are separated into general collections of books, they also have the library technical services. Worried about too much noise and getting distracted? The Claire T. Carney Library is perfect for silence since everyone else in there are also dedicating their time to study.

Another great choice to get free Wifi, while still want to study at a library, would be the Millicent Library in Fairhaven. Great for Fairhaven locals and any local high school kids who want to get a head start on this year’s academic work. Not only does it have gorgeous architecture but also an amazing history as well. It is another great place if you’re looking for silence! They are opened Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m to 8 p.m, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 to 6 p.m and Saturday from 9 to 3 p.m. So check your schedule and see which is the perfect time to go and get some studying done.

If you are looking for more of a fun, exciting study area, why not try out some local cafes? A very popular shop among most college students is Mirasol’s Cafe in Dartmouth. They have delicious food, drinks and a young, vibrant atmosphere with free Wifi. How great166488_472312602953_7162537_n can it get? It is always filled with either college students, teachers or business workers on their laptops or friends mingling around a pile of Chippis. So try not to go during rush hours or you might not get a seat! But with this unusually warm fall weather, you can always study on their outside patio.

If you are looking for another cafe that is just like Mirasol’s, both in style and location, then why not try out Panera Bread? Both are fun and definitely more social than a library if you don’t mind it being busy and loud every now and then. It all depends on your studying style. Some people need complete silence and some need to have some background noise in order to get anything done.

In the meantime, if you’re looking for a more comfy atmosphere that is on the quiet side, why not check out the Green Bean in New Bedford? A great and colorful cafe with friendly vibes from every corner and perfect for you BCC students! It’s a great place to sit down, get some work done, try delicious lattes and maybe even chat with a stranger or two. Though,

400219_10150592356737381_994078952_nthere are constant customers, the Green Bean always seems to have a respectable volume of talking that isn’t too overbearing. And if you are looking for something to do after hours of studying, the Green Bean hosts open mic nights with great local bands! Perfect way to let off some steam and relax after a long hard day’s work!

Another quiet area that has free Wifi, would be Starbucks in Dartmouth. Located inside of Target, Starbucks is a perfect place to get some coffee (definitely going to need some energy after all that studying) and maybe even do some shopping when you’re done! It is normally quiet since it is an add on Starbucks, rather than it’s own branch, so don’t worry about it being to noisy.

Check back in with the New Bedford Travel Guide for any other exciting blog posts and don’t forget to add a comment below about your experiences at any one of these WiFi hot spots or if we didn’t include your favorite WiFi hot spots!
