Meet Frederick Douglass

A former slave, Frederick Douglass fought for African-American rights during the Civil War years. Known for his eloquence, he served as living proof to the public of the capacity of African-Americans when given the chance. After the Civil War ended, Douglass continued to used his skills in oration to fight for woman’s rights and to further fight for civil rights.

Early Life

Frederick Douglass was born a slave in Maryland. His mother, Harriet Bailey, was a slave and his father was an unknown white man. Eventually, Douglass was sent to Baltimore, where he served a man named Hugh Auld. Auld’s wife Sophia began teaching Douglass how to read around the age of twelve, but Auld demanded that she stop. These few reading lessons were all that Douglass needed to discover his love for knowledge.

In order to improve himself without his masters knowing, Douglass would secretly read old newspapers and magazines. He would also learn to read from young children he encountered in the streets, along with studying the writings he found wherever he worked. While Douglass learned to read, he simultaneously established his views on equal rights and abolition.

Freedom In the North

After moving from one slave-owner to another, Douglass made multiple escape attempts, but finally broke free to the North in 1838. He arrived in New York and stayed at the safe house of an abolitionist. Douglass then sent for Anna Murray to join him to New York. Murray was a free black woman who Douglass had fallen in love with back in Baltimore. After the two reunited, they moved to New Bedford.

The couple lived at Nathan and Polly Johnson’s house, who were also abolitionists and and agents in the Underground Railroad. Douglass joined multiple organizations, including the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, which was later named after him, and other abolition groups. He reluctantly gave his first speech at an anti-slavery meeting in Nantucket, where he spoke about his difficult life as a slave.

He eventually found speaking on abolition to be his calling, and would give many more speeches throughout his life. Douglass would even put his life at risk to voice his opinion, as many of his presentations in the south were greeted with violence against him and his views. Douglass’s articulate speeches astounded his audience to the degree where many of them questioned whether he was actually a former slave, or if other people wrote them. Douglass himself questioned whether both his talents and knowledge of the extreme inequalities between races was a gift or a curse. However, through his eloquence, Douglass spread his life story and views on equal rights throughout Massachusetts, the United States, and eventually, the rest of the world.

Portuguese Food Favorites

The South Coast offers a variety of food options, but one thing that’s hard to find is authentic Portuguese food! Since the South Coast has such a high population of Portuguese, Azorean, and Brazilian residents, it’s only natural that the delicious food followed suit. Vegetarians beware, the culture loves meat and seafood!

Some of the area’s best Portuguese cuisine can be found at the Inner Bay Cafe. Located near New Bedford‘s bay, you can enjoy your meal in one of their charming dining rooms, or out on their deck for a beautiful sunset on the water. Naturally, they couldn’t claim themselves as Portuguese without traditional plates like their Codfish Broa, which is made with cornbread, traditional Portuguese seasoning, crushed pepper, and other tasty ingredients. Inner Bay’s spicy Chourico, served flaming on a traditional Portuguese plate, shows just a little of Inner Bay’s artistic side when it comes to their food. Some other local favorites include the Octopus dish, or their Regional Tuna, made with pumpkin seeds and black pepper, served over vegetables. Every seafood dish at Inner Bay uses fresh ingredients straight off of New Bedford’s own fishing boats, so you know your meal will be top quality and fresh. You can even save a few bucks using our Inner Bay coupon!

Antonio’s Restaurant and Cafe in New Bedford also has plenty of great Portuguese options. With a sports bar /family room, you can enjoy a meal no matter what the occasion. My favorite plates are the Steak Antonio’s style, served with a slice of ham, an egg, rice, and fries, and the Cacoila plate. If you want to watch your favorite sports while you enjoy delicious Portuguese food, you can also head down the street to the End Zone Sports Pub. They have multiple big screen TVs to watch as you enjoy savor dishes like Carne Espito (marinated tenderloin tips) and Portuguese style Littlenecks and Shrimp. For some Azorean flavor, visit Portas da Cidade in Westport. Try their Galinho Á Alentejana, which combines sauteed chicken with their delicious littlenecks and potatoes. Almost everything they serve at Portas da Cidade is made in Azorean or Madeiran style, so it’s near impossible to choose something delicious!

While these definitely aren’t the only Portuguese restaurants on the South Coast, they’re great places to start your food adventures with Portuguesse roots. There’s plenty of beef, pork, and fish to go around and when you’re done, make sure to finish your experience with something sweet like malasadas or sweet rice pudding, and of course, some Madeira wine! Check out some more traditional Portuguese dishes and be sure to view our day trip to these great local restaurants.

Candles To Love

A great atmosphere at home or in the office starts with pleasing the senses. While keeping a room looking clean is a great place to start a good feng shui, you won’t need a zen garden for positive vibes. Smell often sets the tone of a room or even an entire house, which is where Lovelife Soy Candles comes in. Offering a variety of products, the aromas from Lovelife candles and other merchandise create an ambiance that that you won’t forget.

Owners Nathan Raposo and Mark Leitao started Lovelife Soy Candles after finding their passion for making candles at home. “It just came to us one day. We started making them as gifts and giving them away to friends and family. Then we started getting orders for them because people loved them so much,” Nathan said. After that, Lovelife Soy Candles was born!

Everything at Lovelife is homemade by Mark and Nathan with eco-friendly soy wax blends and premium fragrances. They have 40 different scents available in any of their three candles sizes, tarts, tea lights, or reed diffusers. Besides the great aromas, my favorite part of their candles are the wooden wicks, which crackle while they burn. They have some interesting scents like “Orange and Chili Pepper”, but their Aromatherapy candles are great for relaxing and relieving stress.

Many of the events Lovelife Candles hold and attend are community based. Their upcoming Holiday Sales Event Open House will feature booths and donations from other local businesses like Pretty Lil Angel Bows in Brockton and Divine Massage in Mattapoisett. “The events are great for local businesses to share their products with the community,” Mark said while talking about companies reserving a spot in their store for the Open House. Lovelife also attends events at local churches and schools, like Greater New Bedford Regional Voc-Tech’s Christmas Fair.

New Bedford: Historic Architecture

The Beginning

The city of New Bedford dates back to the Colonial years, when the land was purchased in 1652 from the Wampanoag tribes, whom called the area “Acushnet” or “Cushnea”. The territory was later named Old Dartmouth in 1664, which included present day New Bedford, Dartmouth, Westport, and Fairhaven.

Joseph Russell, who owned much of the land around what is County, Spring, and Elm Street today, built his home on County Street, and by 1750, Joseph Russell III designed plans for village streets and house lots near the shore area of the family property. In 1760, a shipbuilder by the name of John Loudon, purchased the first plot of land from the Russells and built his home on what is Water Street today.

Other craftsmen soon followed Loudon in purchasing lots and building homes in the area, and established the young village’s growing industry. Joseph Rotch named the small town Bedford, after the Duke of Bedford in England, who’s family name was Russell. Rotch is credited with bringing improved whaling methods to the town, which formerly only used smaller ships for trips closer to the shore.

Town Destruction

After becoming annoyed with the Revolution, the English raided the Bedford Village in 1778, destroying most ships and buildings, which included the original Loudon and Rotch homes. With the destruction of most of the town’s industry, Bedford’s prosperity came to a halt, as a whaling vessel wouldn’t leave the town for seven years. After the American Revolution ended, Bedford rebuilt and officially became the town of New Bedford in 1787, to differentiate it from the town of Bedford located near Boston.

Reviving A Community

Once the 1800’s arrived, New Bedford’s flourishing whaling industry opened the door for the many beautiful buildings still around today. Since most of the Colonial period building were destroyed, the oldest building style you’ll find are Federal Period. This usually included “balustraded low hip roofs, elaborate fences and magnificently detailed porticos and front entries.”Federal Period style of buildings were popular from 1785 until around 1820, where the Greek Revival Period began.

Thomas Jefferson played a major role in bringing the architecture styles of ancient Rome and Greece to New Bedford. He dislike Colonial, or Georgian style and Federal styles, and saw the Greek style to be fitting for the freed democratic nation. The most obvious Greek Revival building can be found in public buildings, with their large columns and classic temple design, but the Rotch-Jones-Duff House & Garden Museum also gives a fantastic example of this style of architecture. The Greek Revival period stayed in popularity until 1850, with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. As technology advanced rapidly in America, the Victorian style of housing thrived with it, which combined many different aspects of past styles to create truly individual and captivating houses. The Melville House, located on Madison Street, is a perfect example of Victorian architecture, and is now run as a bed and breakfast. Captain Haskell’s Octagon House on Union Street provides another beautiful and unique Victorian era house, which also runs as a bed and breakfast.

Many of these historic buildings are located downtown in New Bedford’s Historic District, but many interesting historic houses can be found throughout the city. This mix of different eras of architecture and structure give New Bedford a truly unique feel to the city, whether you come to visit or live here your whole life. There are few places quite like it.

Tasty Burger Spots

Craving a good burger? While there are more than enough fast food places to choose from, most of them hand you a dull burger and send you on your way. Quick, easy, and often times, flavorless! But if you’re looking for a quality burger in a great environment, there are plenty great locations in the South Coast to choose from.

Five Guys Burgers & Fries, Dartmouth

Don’t be fooled by their chain of restaurants nationwide, Five Guys Burgers & Fries still makes great food. New customers might hesitate to build their dream burger at first, but you might just learn something new about yourself there. Should you use BBQ sauce? Is adding jalepeno peppers a good idea for my burger? Whatever you want to try, you can add as many toppings as you want. They say there’s over 250,000 ways to order a burger at Five Guys, so chances are good they can make your dream burger into reality.

Rose Alley Ale House, New Bedford

Rose Alley Ale House is known for good beer and great times. Live music on the weekends and numerous craft beers on tap make it hard not to have fun there. As if it couldn’t get any better, they serve delicious food there too! Rose Alley offers a variety of dishes, but having one of their burgers with a good draft beer is an experience all on its own. They don’t list them as “Prime Burgers” for no reason. You can custom make one, or choose from their specialties that are all amazing. I would suggest the Rose Alley Burger with one of their Ommegang beers on tap, but life is about tough choices, so sit back, relax, and find your own favorite combination.

Max’s, Dartmouth

Max’s restaurant on the side of Route 6 is easy to miss, but hard to forget once you’ve eaten there. Their list of specialty burgers has something for every taste, with choices like Portuguese, Hawaiian, Philly, and even Veggie burgers! For those brave enough to take on their ultimate test, Max’s also offers the B.A.B Challenge! See if you can eat their massive mountain of burger and fries in under 12 minutes and secure your place on Max’s Wall of Fame. If you’re not looking for a challenge, you can just grab a great cheeseburger and watch the game at Max’s.

End Zone Sports Pub, New Bedford

The End Zone Sports Pub features a lot of food you would expect to find at a sports bar. Wings, pizza, burgers, and more, but that doesn’t do the End Zone’s dishes justice. Their specialty burgers, along with giant televisions around the restaurant, make it a great place to eat and watch the game. You could even eat their Red Sox Burger while watching the Red Sox! Red Sox overload perhaps? Try something different, like their Big Texan Burger or End Zone Burger.

Freestones City Grill, New Bedford

Freestones, located on the cobble stone streets of Downtown New Bedford, doesn’t seem like the perfect burger place, with their variety of other dishes, but their burgers are just as good as everything else they make. Freestones offers a few different burgers that are simply awesome! Choices like their Bacon Blue Burger, topped with crumbled blue cheese and bacon, along with their great atmosphere inside make for a great overall experience for a date, family night, or even just going out with some good friends.

Getting Lost in Fall’s Foliage

This past weekend, I found myself with some extra time on my hands. With Fall here, I decided to explore Dartmouth’s beautiful back roads. The South Coast’s Fall foliage provides plenty of great opportunities for leaf peeping anywhere. Being more familiar with the North Dartmouth area, I considered taking a drive toward Hixville Village to enjoy the terrific winding roads through the forest. On this day, however, I decided to make it a point to get lost!

The first step in getting lost was to simply start driving around South Dartmouth. Starting out in Padnaram, the first sight I enjoyed was Apponagansett Bay while driving over the bridge on Gulf Road. After driving through a densely populated stretch of housing on Gulf Road, I reached the famous Davoll’s General Store, and went down Slades Corner Road. I turned off my radio, silenced my phone, and enjoyed the ride!

At this time in the year, the leaves are only starting to change colors, but the combination of various landscapes along the road still made for a charming view. Living in the city, you almost forget that houses and other properties can add just as much to a sightseeing experience as nature. Developments with cookie-cutter houses every few feet can bore a spectator to tears, but the houses along the roads of South Dartmouth were amazing! Whether it was their rustic appeal or their distinctive characteristics, almost every house was its own work of art. Stone walls, farm houses, and even windmills were aplenty.

IMG_1154

Once I reached Division Road, I decided to chicken out, so I turned around and headed back. I reached the Davoll’s General Store again, but instead of heading back home on Russells Mills Road, I took the right onto Horseneck Road. Immediately I saw a small park called the Russells Mills Landing. It had a nice little playground, some benches, and some picnic tables, but what drew me in was its location along the Pakamansett River. While I walked along the river, I noticed an egret splashing around in the water and a hawk gliding near the trees above. Being around wildlife and this pleasantly calm river almost made my trip worth it alone. However, I had to move on!

After leaving Russells Mills Landing, I continued down Horseneck Road, passing extensive farm lands with Pakamansett River winding behind them. These kinds of images would be picturesque in almost any season, as the backcountry of Dartmouth, and maybe Westport at this point, show off their beauty.

Finally deciding it was time to go home, and running out of gas, I pulled out my GPS and found my way back to the city. These spectacular views aren’t too far from the hustle and bustle of Route 6, so you can ditch the car for a nice bike ride around Dartmouth’s winding roads for an even greater experience!

Fall: Home of Great Beer!

While other seasons have their strengths, like summer’s warm weather or winter’s holiday spirit, fall triumphs head and shoulders over every other time of the year in the category of beer! Other seasonal beers often leave something to be desired with disappointing flavors, but Fall beers are often packed with flavor. Oktoberfest, the most popular style of Fall beer, originates from the German tradition of Oktoberfest, which is one of the world’s largest fairs held in Munich.

Many American breweries have since created their own take on Oktoberfest beers that have since made the style a huge success. Since many breweries also make pumpkin beers during the fall as well, some people confuse the styles. So if you dislike everything pumpkin from pie to beverages, don’t be afraid to buy an Oktoberfest beer!

Every Oktoberfest beer is different depending on the company that makes it. Sam Adams makes one of the most popular Oktoberfest beers in America, which can be found in just about any bar, pub, or liquor store. But, if you want to try some hidden gems of the Oktoberfest beers, you have to search harder. Liquor stores like Town Liquors in Dartmouth and Barry’s Fine Wine & Spirits in New Bedford have some of the best selections of local and craft beers all year. Wachusett Brewing Co., Left Hand Brewing Co., and Leinenkugel’s Brewing Co. make some of my favorite Oktoberfest beers that aren’t too hard to find.

Pumpkin ales are a completely different story. While many brewing companies don’t make Oktoberfest styles at all, other companies will make multiple pumpkin beers. Shipyard’s Pumpkinhead Ale is one of the more popular pumpkin beers in the South Coast, but their Smashed Pumpkin is actually the company’s masterpiece. Dogfish Head, a company known for great beers, makes one of my favorite seasonal brews, Punkin Ale beer.

It just wouldn’t be fair if these delicious beers were only available in liquor stores. Many of downtown New Bedford’s pubs and bars include great selections of these and other Oktoberfest and pumpkin beers. Rose Alley Ale House features one of the best selections of beers on tap to go along with their consistently great atmosphere, with live music played on the weekends. The Pour Farm Tavern is one of my favorite places to go with great beer and live musicians. A great opportunity to try some seasonal brews along with other activities and food to eat can be found at the New Bedford Oktoberfest.

You don’t need a plane ticket to Germany to get a great Oktoberfest experience. Stay in the South Coast and enjoy the local take on tasty beer, food, and tradition!

Outdoor Fun!

Parks are awesome, plain and simple. Whether you want to play basketball, frisbee, soccer, or just want to lay down in a big field of grass, the South Coast has more than enough options to meet your outdoor needs. You can find a lot of great places to go easily, but sometimes the hidden gems are even better!

Buttonwood Park in New Bedford clearly stands out as one of the area’s bigger parks. With multiple baseball fields, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, and even the zoo, a family could easily spend a whole day at Buttonwood. The fields at Buttonwood have enough open space for any kind of activities you could want, with groups like little league football and baseball teams practicing there seasonally. Also, the pond at Buttonwood makes a great spot to just sit and relax.

Fairhaven‘s more beautiful recreation areas can be found at Fort Phoenix. Located near the water, Fort Phoenix offers great views, along with tennis and basketball courts, beach areas, a playground, and even spots to fish! After you soak up some of the military history of the Fort, grab some friends and have a game of ultimate frisbee in the park area. The ocean breeze makes things a little more interesting!

Now, don’t let those college kids intimidate you, but UMass Darmtouth has great open fields to enjoy! Along with some decent basketball courts and an outdoor street hockey rink, the only problem you might encounter is parking during the school year. The campus police give tickets to cars without a UMass parking decal, but they don’t ticket outside of the school year, so make sure to take advantage during the summer if you’re not already student or faculty!

One of my favorite basketball spots can be found off of Slocum Road in Dartmouth. Burgo Basketball Association features some of the best basketball facilities open to the public in the South Coast. With five regulation size courts and a concession stand, BBA is a great spot for children and adults alike to enjoy a pick up game or join one of the BBA’s leagues. It can get busy at Burgo’s, but with five full-size courts it isn’t a problem to find an open spot or join a group for a game.

While Burgo Basketball Association can be hard to find, the place I like to call the “Purple Dinosaur Park” in Dartmouth is next to impossible to find unless you already know it’s there! Officially, it’s called the Dartmouth Regional Park & Trails, but I still prefer Purple Dinosaur Park. The DRPT is hidden off of Old Fall River Road, on a side road with several speed bumps. Once you finish the tedious task of driving over all the bumps, you’ll find a beautiful park in the woods of Dartmouth. The park includes basketball courts (of course), a two baseball fields, a sand volleyball court, a covered picnic area, hiking trails, and a very nice playground area complete with, you guessed it, a purple Tyrannosaurus Rex! The purple dinosaur is really only big enough for children to play on, but you can still dream!

If you want to go on an adventure or if you just want a quick spot to enjoy the outdoors, the South Coast has you covered. Beautiful scenery and great public facilities makes this area’s parks top notch!

Fighting Stress on the Coast

For students, fall can be a stressful season in New England. With schoolwork piling up and memories of warm summer days making it harder to cope with the dropping temperatures, anxieties can make a person burst! Thankfully, the South Coast has the remedy you need to knock out your worries.

Exercise gives the body a great way to release tension. Running is my personal favorite, and many of the best spots to run just so happen to be on the waterfront! Of course running in the sand at Horseneck Beach, Gooseberry Island, or Round Hill Beach presents a great challenge for experienced runners, but occasional runners like myself might want to stick to a solid surface.

One of my favorite locations is the path that goes around Fort Taber in New Bedford. Starting from the Fort Taber parking lot, follow the outside path that leads to Rodney French Blvd, re-enter the park on the other side, and you will eventually make a total lap of about 1.5 miles.

Some of my other favorite running places include Buttonwood Park at about 2 miles a lap if you go around the whole park or a little less than a mile if you just want to run around the zoo area, and Ring Road at UMass Dartmouth for another 1.5 mile run.

Exercise isn’t the only way to relieve stress. For the non-athletic type, there are plenty of great locations to grab a bite to eat or just hang out with friends. Take a break from your work-zone to visit cafes like Panera Bread and Mirasol’s Cafe for some delicious food and free internet. Don’t forget to try Mirasol’s famous Chippi while you’re there!

If its later in the day, grab a glass of wine by yourself or with a few friends. Wine, specifically red wine, has great health benefits in moderation, and you will feel the benefits of relaxation along with your strong heart and lowered cholesterol. Attending a wine tasting is one great option, but you can get a quicker fix at the classy Cork Wine & Tapas Bar in downtown New Bedford and try one of the local dishes and drinks.

No matter what you choose for relaxation, just remember to slow down and enjoy the sights and experiences the South Coast has to offer. Don’t forget to take a break!
